Lubricant for Chainsaw Bars and Chains
Bar and chain oil selection for chainsaws including viscosity requirements, biodegradable options, and cold-weather formulations.
Chainsaw bar and chain oil is specifically formulated to stay on the bar and chain at high speeds while providing lubrication to reduce friction and heat buildup. General-purpose oils lack the tackifiers needed for this application.
Why Specialized Bar Oil
Bar and chain oil contains tackifiers (stringy additives) that help the oil adhere to metal surfaces despite centrifugal force. At chain speeds exceeding 50 ft/sec, standard oils fling off immediately.
Summer vs. Winter Formulations
| Season | Viscosity | Pour Point | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | ISO VG 100-150 | -15°C | Above 5°C ambient |
| Winter | ISO VG 68-100 | -30°C | Below 5°C ambient |
| All-season | Varies | -25°C | Moderate temperature range |
Winter formulations have lower viscosity to flow through the oiler system in cold weather. Using summer oil in winter results in inadequate lubrication and accelerated wear.
Biodegradable Options
For environmentally sensitive areas (near waterways, protected forests), biodegradable bar oils based on vegetable esters or synthetic esters are available. These meet requirements like EU Ecolabel or USDA BioPreferred.
Oiler Adjustment
Most chainsaws have adjustable oil flow. Proper setting depends on:
- Bar length (longer bars need more oil)
- Wood type (hardwood needs more)
- Operating conditions (dusty conditions may need more)
Check oil delivery by holding the running saw over light-colored surface—you should see oil spray pattern.
Substitutes
While dedicated bar oil is optimal, acceptable substitutes include:
- New motor oil (not used) in emergencies
- Vegetable oil for short-term use in sensitive areas
Avoid: used motor oil, transmission fluid, or thin penetrating oils.
Operating Conditions
| Operating Parameter | Typical Range/Value |
|---|---|
| Operating Temperature | -30°C to +40°C ambient |
| Speed | Chain speeds up to 70 ft/sec |
| Lubrication Method | Automatic oiler; metered delivery to bar nose |
| Environment | Wood debris, dust; may be near water |
| Oil Consumption | Designed to be consumed during operation |
Required Lubricant Properties
| Required Property | Specification |
|---|---|
| Viscosity | ISO VG 100-150 (summer); VG 68-100 (winter) |
| Tackiness | High tack to resist fling-off at chain speed |
| Adhesion | Must adhere to bar rail and chain |
| Pumpability | Must flow through oiler system at operating temp |
| Pour Point | <-20°C for winter use |
| Environmental | Biodegradable options for sensitive areas |
Compatibility Warnings
- -Used motor oil is not suitable—lacks tackifiers and may damage oiler
- -Vegetable oils may gum up if saw is stored with oil in system
- -Winter-grade oil is required below 0°C for proper oiler function
